You drove a Prius? What’s so bad about that?

Braking, as in extra regen to provide engine braking.

The new one is ugly but it really isn’t that bad.

Because trendy. Many makers use something like this.
It also engages park automatically when you turn it off.

I like the Toyota still offers a PWR mode. Pressurized Water Reactors get a lot of crap for being unsafe, but dammit they work!

Because if you make a joystick shifter without a P button you end up with this .

For some reason pressing the PWR button doesn’t cancel out EV mode. You can have both modes on at once.

I guess it wasn’t that bad, driving it meant I didn’t have to look at it.

All that switchgear looks horrendously cheap.

Although, applying much throttle at all cancels out EV mode, and PWR just makes the throttle more sensitive.
(EV mode has one real usage scenario - moving the car around in a parking lot without causing the engine to start a warmup cycle.)

You don’t want someone accidentally grabbing reverse instead of park (although by default, they beep like crazy in reverse), especially because all normal shifter operations involve pulling it towards you. (B, and your proposed P, would be just down or up from the resting position).
Making park a separate button means it’s a completely different motion, which is less likely to get confused.
The general rule is, push up to go backwards, push down to go forwards. Park isn’t backwards OR forwards.

Actually, it also brings aggressive engine - and I mean actual engine - braking into play, too.
Really, just use it when going down mountains.

there are “mode” buttons all over that center stack.... how many modes does a person need?
